A Brief History Page 2
Western claims & Connecticut's Claims
Western Claims
Seven of the original colonies were given "Sea to Sea" charters by the British
which literally meant from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. Most of the claims overlapped. After the American Revolution the states continued to claim their charters to the new Mississippi River western boundary of The United States. They were Connecticut, Virginia, Massachusetts , New York, North & South Carolina & Georgia. |
Connecticut's Western claims
Connecticut (translates to "Long Tidal River", referring to the Connecticut River) had a long history of claims & colonization both as a colony & state. They skirmished with Pennsylvania over eastern PA at Susquehanna.
Relinquishing these PA claims were part of its deal to get the Reserve. |
